Why Managing Upwards is Important

In a recent coaching session, we dove into “managing upwards”. While it’s often seen as a way to further our own interests, it can also be a valuable tool for advocating for our team’s needs.

Imagine a scenario where you are dealing with a heavy workload and facing unreasonable deadlines that overlap. In such situations, what is your usual course of action? How do you communicate with your team, and how do you establish and handle their expectations? What about your relationship with your manager? How frequently do you work on managing your manager’s expectations and openly discussing what is feasible, while attempting to negotiate more reasonable work plans?

Are there other instances where you might need to manage upward for the benefit of your team?
